How to Boil Chicken Breast
Boiling chicken breast is a simple, healthy way to prepare lean protein. Start with boneless, skinless breasts. Place them in a pot and cover with cold water by about an inch. Add salt to the water for flavor – a teaspoon per quart is a good starting point.
Bring the water to a rolling boil, then immediately reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot. For average-sized breasts (about 6-8 oz), simmer for 10-15 minutes. Thinner breasts may only need 8-10 minutes, while larger ones might take up to 20 minutes. The chicken is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and the juices run clear.
Avoid over-boiling, which can lead to dry, tough chicken. Let the chicken rest in the hot water for a few minutes after removing it from the heat to ensure maximum tenderness. This method yields perfectly cooked chicken for salads, sandwiches, or shredding.
