Plane Liquid Limits Explained

TSA Liquid Carry-On Rules

When flying, the TSA limits liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on bag to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) per container. All containers must fit comfortably within a single, clear, quart-sized zip-top bag. This is often referred to as the 3-1-1 rule: 3.4 ounces per item, 1 quart-sized bag, and 1 bag per passenger.

This applies to everything from water bottles and shampoo to toothpaste and hand lotion. If you need to bring larger quantities of liquids, they must be packed in your checked luggage. Items like medical necessities or infant formula may be exempt from these restrictions, but you should declare them to TSA officers upon arrival at the security checkpoint.

Checked Luggage vs. Carry-On

For items exceeding the 3.4-ounce limit, your checked baggage is the place to store them. This includes larger bottles of drinks, full-sized toiletries, or any other liquids you wish to bring onboard in bulk. Remember, the 3.4-ounce rule is for your safety and the safety of others, ensuring liquids don't pose a hazard.

Always pack smart and adhere to these guidelines to ensure a quick and stress-free airport experience.
